THE MONUMENTS MEN
This year, heroism is the umbrella topic for all screenings within the American Film Summer. Why? As we commemorate the 80th anniversary of the end of WWII, we wished to highlight the many faces of heroism. This time, we are presenting wartime heroes. However, this will not be a movie about typical soldiers. While The Monuments Men wore uniforms, they were educated as art historians and worked as curators and museum directors before they joined the U.S. Army. As members of a special unit tasked with rescuing artistic masterpieces from German thieves, they returned them to their rightful owners. They were following the footsteps of Allied forces in Europe as the war was concluding and were putting their lives at risk to save art masterpieces. George Clooney is the director, producer, writer, and main star of this film. Matt Damon, Bill Murray, and Cate Blanchett are other members of the cast.
In English with Czech subtitles, 118 minutes, 2014 film.
