Arts and Culture

American Gothic is a 1930 painting by Grant Wood in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago. Wood was inspired to paint what is now known as the American Gothic House in Eldon, Iowa, along with “the kind of people [he] fancied should live in that house”.

Arts and culture are important ways for people to connect. One of the most significant cultural institutions in the United States is the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. It is made up of 18 museums housing 142 million items. It was founded by scientist James Smithson, who left his collections to the United States. Unlike the Czech Republic, the U.S. Government does not have a “Ministry of Culture.” However, each year Congress allocates money to the Smithsonian and many other cultural sites and programs. As a result, entry to most of the Smithsonian museums is free of charge.
