Soon your refrigerator may tell you when you are running low on milk, and then place an order on its own, and you will be greeted in the morning by your friendly talking coffee maker. The Internet of Things (IoT) will soon offer the ability to connect and exchange data among millions of everyday devices and make products more effective in serving human needs. An application of IoT to managing energy use at the consumer level will be discussed too as an illustrative example.

Jeff Frolik is a Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of Vermont and is the current the Fulbright-CTU Distinguished Chair at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Czech Technical University in Prague. He received his PhD in Electrical Engineering Systems from the University of Michigan. His ongoing research interests are in the areas of sensor networks, wireless channels, coordination of distributed energy assets, and engineering education. He is co-founder of the startup Packetized Energy.
