About the Event

Paul Goldsmith described his experience on the morning of August 21: “I awoke early to the rumble of engines. I looked out the window, expecting to see trucks; instead I saw Soviet tanks wheeling into position on the campus, blocking all entrances and exits. I grabbed my backpack, camera, and film and went out to photograph the invasion of Prague.“

These photographs sat quietly in a portfolio, shared only with family and friends, for some forty years until a lunchtime conversation with a friend led to the discovery of the unique historic and artistic value of the work. Eight of the photographs were accepted into the permanent collection of the Chicago Art Institute, and five were purchased by the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.

Paul Goldsmith will visit the American Center on September 15, 2014, to participate in a program and talk about the photos in person – keep an eye on our September program!

In Czech and English.
