About the Event

Lenka Rubenstein is a portrait painter who fell in love with the seascapes and landscapes of Nantucket Island, a place lost-in-time, located 30 miles off the coast of the U.S. state of Massachusetts. Lenka is mostly a self-taught painter, with occasional well-meant professional criticism from her friend and tutor Silvia, who is a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts. Lenka’s works have been shown in juried exhibitions across the United States and her portraits were selected in three of the past five years as semi-finalists for the National Portrait Gallery’s prestigious annual BP Award competition in London.

A Czech (and recently also US) citizen born in the former Czechoslovakia, Lenka holds a PhD in linguistics from Charles University in Prague and has worked in Europe and the United States in broadcasting, print journalism, free-lance translating, and artistic (painting and pottery) pursuits. She lives with her husband in Vrané nad Vltavou on the Vltava River just south of Prague, and also in upstate New York and on the island of Nantucket.
