Seventy one years ago, the U.S. and Japanese armies clashed on Iwo Jima. A few decades later, several hundred letters were discovered in the lava soil of the island.
These letters suddenly give a face and a voice to the Japanese soldiers, who were diverted to Iwo Jima and realized that their chance of returning from the battlefield was slim.
Due to General Tadamichi Kuribayashi´s unprecedented tactics, the battle dragged on for forty days showing a heroic and resourceful defense of Japanese positions.
