About the Event

In the last several decades, the social and ethnic setup of the newcomers experienced a radical change, as did their reasons for their coming to the US and their expectations of their new life there. A collective of authors from the Department of American Studies (Faculty of Social Sciences, Charles University) with Miloš Calda as an editor look in more detail at some of the problems associated with the immigration issue in their recently published monograph Recent Perspectives. Integration of Newcomers (Prague: Dokořán, 2011).

In their publication, they describe what problems and challenges the immigrants have to face in the United States in the long run, what reaction from the majority society they can expect to encounter, what are the differences between various communities of immigrants, and also, how the changing nature of the newcomers and the changing conditions in the United States have combined to produce lasting, sometimes irreversible, effects on American politics, society and culture.
