About the Event

The 2013 documentary film Banjo Romantika helps provide some of the historical context for Czech love of bluegrass music and also helps interpret the “Americanism” that is common throughout the present-day Czech Republic. Dr. Lee Bidgood will introduce the film and discuss some of the ideas that he and filmmaker Shara Lange convey through the film’s presentation of musical performance, interviews, and observational material.

Lee Bidgood, PhD is a musician, educator, and ethnomusicologist, and works as Assistant Professor in the Department of Appalachian Studies at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, TN. Bidgood completed his doctoral studies in Critical and Comparative Studies in Music at the University of Virginia in 2010. He has conducted ethnomusicological fieldwork in the Czech Republic since 2002, focusing on the performance of Americanism by Czechs involved with bluegrass-related music making.

In English.

For the Fulbright Series, we are introducing the Czech Fulbright grantees who have studied in the U.S., or the U.S. grantees who are currently teaching or researching in the Czech Republic.
