About the Event

Even in well-established democracies, misinformation and disinformation are deployed to overwhelm and confuse the idea that an objective truth can even be known.  Participants from the Vaclav Havel and Jiri Dienstbier Journalism Fellowship programs, from countries on the front-lines of conflict and change, will talk about the role of disinformation in their societies, its impact on professional journalism, and the need, more than ever, for reliable, fact-based reporting.  In many countries, economic factors also affect the quality of information people receive, favoring powerful interests and agendas while making it difficult for alternative voices to be heard.  The Vaclav Havel Journalism Fellowship and the Jiri Dienstbier Fellowship are joint initiatives of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic.  Fellows from Post-Soviet and Eastern European states – Hermine Virabyan from Armenia, Gulnar Salimova from Azerbaijan, Victoria Colesnic from Moldova, Karina Merkuryeva from Russia and Jovana Georgievski from Serbia – will deliver remarks and host a Q&A after an introduction by a U.S. Embassy representative.

The discussion will be in English.
