About the Event

Ranging from George Catlin’s “Indian Gallery” paintings that toured Europe in the the 1840s, epic landscape paintings of the National Parks, and the rise of tourism and public fascination with the American West, this lecture will discuss the phenomenon of the “Wild West” in American art and popular culture through paintings, prints, dime novels, film, and advertisement, discussing the ways in which artistic portrayals of the region have influenced our perceptions of American culture for nearly two centuries.
