About the Event

Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? a 1966 American black comedy-drama film nominated for thirteen Academy Awards, that examines the breakdown of the marriage of a bitter aging couple with the help of alcohol, using a young couple to fuel anguish and emotional pain towards each other.

Set on the campus of a small New England college, the film focuses on the volatile relationship of associate history professor George and his hard-drinking wife Martha, the daughter of the college president. Late one evening, after a university faculty party, they receive an unwitting younger couple, Nick and Honey, as guests and draw them into their bitter and frustrated relationship when Martha begins to flirt brashly with Nick while his wife tries to pretend she is unaware of what is happening. This brings the young couple in the middle of their marital warfare, with unpleasant results.

The film won five awards, including a second Academy Award for Best Actress for Elizabeth Taylor and the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for Sandy Dennis. However, the film lost to A Man for All Seasons for the Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay awards, and both Richard Burton and George Segal failed to win in their categories.

IMDB rating: 8.1/10
