About the Event

Showcasing women’s role in postwar Czechoslovakian glass design, Amy Hughes’s discussion explores the connections between U.S. and Czechoslovakian glass artists during the 1960s to 1980s, a period which saw the rise of the Studio Glass Movement. The movement was instrumental in driving artists to utilize the sculptural properties of glass to express both abstract and conceptual ideas.

Amy will trace the ways contemporary female glass artists in both countries transcended thinking about glass design as either purely functional or decorative by creating works deeply engaged in current political, social and environmental issues facing our world today.

In English.

Part of the American Center’s series on women’s leadership in September.
