About the Event

American romantic comedy film (1953) directed by Jean Negulesco and produced and written by Nunnally Johnson. The film stars Marilyn Monroe, Betty Grable and Lauren Bacall, as three gold diggers. The screenplay was based on the plays The Greeks Had a Word for It by Zoë Akins and Loco by Dale Eunson and Katherine Albert.

Three New York models, Shatze (Lauren Bacall), Pola (Marilyn Monroe) and Loco (Betty Grable) set-up in an exclusive appartment with a plan: tired of cheap men and a lack of money they intend to use all their talents to trap and marry three millionaires. The trouble is that’s it’s not so easy to tell the rich men from the huxters and even when they can, is the money really worth it?

How to Marry a Millionaire was the first film ever to be photographed in the new CinemaScope wide-screen process, and the second released, after The Robe. How to Marry a Millionaire was also the first 1950’s color and CinemaScope film ever to be shown on prime time network television (though panned-and-scanned), when it was presented as the first film on NBC Saturday Night at the Movies in 1961.

Screening in English with English subtitles (95 minutes).
