This event will delve into the “super year” of elections occurring in key regions such as Taiwan, the EU´s European Parliamentary elections, the United Kingdom, the United States, Indonesia, and India. Since the critical 2016 U.S. presidential election, the focus on election integrity has evolved from foreign interference and social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter to threats posed by AI models and deepfake videos. Those who meddle in elections aim to weaken democratic foundations and erode trust in government institutions and factual information.
Defending election integrity now encompasses more than just combating disinformation and cyberattacks. It involves protecting election officials, supporting democratic reforms in transitional democracies such as Ukraine, ensuring transparency from candidates, parties, and tech companies, and utilizing AI and blockchain technology for enhanced security. We will discuss the various strategies implemented by governments and tech platforms over the past year to restore trust and reinforce democratic institutions.
Rachel Rizzo, Nonresident Senior Fellow, Atlantic Council; and Antoine Bondaz, officer from DG IDEA, European Commission; will be speakers, James Holtum, Senior Strategy Director at the Alliance of Democracies Foundation will be moderator of the discussion.
