HOW TO APPLY: Send an email expressing your interest in “US Foreign Policy in the 21st Century” to acprague@state.gov by Wednesday October 23, 2013. Please, include your name, your age, and your current job. If you are a student, please, list your university, department and area of study. Please, include a motivation letter no longer than one paragraph. Hurry up, the number of seats is limited!

 

WHAT IS IT? The course “US Foreign Policy in the 21st century” is offered online via Coursera, starting from October 20. It will address the following questions: · What is American foreign policy? · Who makes it? · Why is it the way it is? · How does it affect the rest of the world?

THE LECTURERS Professor Bruce Jentleson of the Duke University has taught the subject for over 30 years, written one of the leading books on it, and has served in numerous U.S. foreign policy positions. The seminars at the American Center will be led by experienced diplomats and their guests.

 

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT? While participating in the online course, the American Center offers you the unique opportunity to go deeper. Every week following the online lecture, you will have a chance to discuss the course content with foreign policy practitioners. U.S. diplomats from the U.S. Embassy in Prague will discuss the content of the session with you in person. You can ask questions! Discuss issues pertaining to US foreign policy! Learn more! Engage! And meet inspiring people with the same interests!

 

CERTIFICATE After successfully completing the class you will be awarded by a certificate from the U.S. Embassy in Prague during a graduation ceremony in December. Who qualifies for a certificate? A person will qualify for a certificate if they attend in at least 5 sessions and actively participate in the discussions.

2) October 24, 4 pm: Orientation and Follow Up Discussion to CLASS no. 1: Course Overview, Analytic Framework and the Making of U.S. Foreign Policy

3) October 31, 4pm : Follow Up Discussion to Class no. 2: Asia’s Rising Strategic Importance: U.S. Relations with China and in the Asia-Pacific Region

4) November 7, 4 pm: Follow Up Discussion to Class 3: War, Peace, Terrorism, Democracy: Old and New Challenges in the Middle East

5) November 14, 4 pm: Follow-Up Discussion to Class 4: Old Friends, Old Enemy: 21st Century Relations with Europe and Russia

6) November 21, 4 pm: Follow-Up Discussion to Class 5: The Americas: Relations with Latin America and Canada

7) December 5, 4 pm: Follow-Up Discussion to Class 6 Africa: Persisting Old Issues, Pressing Newer Ones

8) GRADUATION CEREMONY: December 19

 

COURSE MATERIAL Material required for the course is available at the American Center. The American Center will also provide access to other sources of information, such as the eLibraryUSA. You may be recommended additional reading material by individual lecturers.
