American Film Summer is here again and we invite you to free film screenings under the stars. This year we start with the romantic classic Casablanca. During World War II, American Rick Blaine runs a nightclub in Casablanca — a place frequented by people in need of forged passports or looking to try their luck at gambling. One day, anti-Nazi resistance fighter Victor Laszlo (despite his Hungarian surname, a man of Czech origin according to the screenplay) visits Rick’s establishment along with his wife, Ilsa. They are trying to obtain visas and escape to the United States as quickly as possible to evade the Gestapo. Rick, however, recognizes in Victor’s wife his former girlfriend. Before long, the two rekindle their relationship and begin planning an escape together.
The lead roles in this black-and-white film from 1942 are played by Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, under the directorial baton of Michael Curtiz.
