Too Long a Solitude   |   Reading by James Ragan

James Ragan, author of award-winning collections of poetry, whose works have been translated into ten languages, will read from his most recent book of poetry “Too Long a Solitude” (2009).  James Ragan has read for six heads of state and at Carnegie Hall and the United Nations. He served for 25 years as the Director of the University of Southern California's Professional Writing Program and more recently as Visiting Distinguished Professor at the University of Oklahoma and Charles University in Prague.

China: from Red to Green? depicts a country at its tipping point and finds a sustainable solution in Steven Holl’s Beijing project. 90 minutes

The Future of Journalism  Lecture

Lecture by William Densmore, who will speak about making a market for digital information, as well as some of his other projects. Professor Densmore is a career journalist, publisher, and entrepreneur.  He is also the director of the the Media Giraffe Project, New England News Forum, and a collaborator on Journalism That Matters. He will stop by Prague before going to lecture at the Summer Journalism School in Havlickuv Brod.

 The lecture will be in English with Czech translation.

Discover NashvilleMusical Program

Come to the American Center’s garden at Wratislav Palace and join us for a discovery of the capital of country music. Musicians who visited and performed in Nashville as well as long time Czech-American residents will recreate the most famous town in the state of Tennessee. Of the hundreds of musical styles competing for attention on the airwaves and Internet in the US, country music is the most popular. Come to see handmade banjos made by Jaroslav Průcha, which made their way to Nashville and to the hands of country music legends.

Nashville’s musical history dates back to 1927, when a radio broadcaster changed music from the Grand Opera to the more popular Barn Dance Show, introducing the selection as the ”Grand Ole Opry”. A musical legend was thus born and has flourished ever since.
