As part of the U.S. Embassy’s Black History Month programs, 13th will be screened at the American Center. 13th is a 2016 American award winning documentary by director Ava DuVernay exploring the “intersection of race, justice and mass incarceration in the United States.” The film is titled after the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, which freed the slaves and prohibited slavery (unless as punishment for a crime).
DuVernay contends that slavery has been perpetuated in U.S. society since the end of the American Civil War. With a potent mixture of archival footage and testimony from a dazzling array of activists, politicians, historians, and formerly incarcerated women and men, DuVernay creates a work of grand historical synthesis.

Each February, Black History Month honors the struggles and triumphs of millions of American citizens over the most devastating obstacles: slavery, prejudice, poverty as well as their contributions to the nation’s cultural and political life.
